Camper together project, Bangkok

The branding philosophy of Camper transcends mere styles and individuality, encompassing a vision of sustainable thinking and the thoughtful use of materials in design products. Recognizing the continuous development and research conducted by the Camper team in these areas, we, PHTAA, as a Bangkok-based interior architect tasked with designing the city's first Camper flagship store, were inspired to envision the ideal Camper store in Bangkok.

Drawing inspiration from the local intellect and context of Thailand, PHTAA developed a deep interest in local Thai construction, materials, and craftsmanship. When designing the interior of the Camper store, we focused on three key local components. Firstly, we embraced the intellectual aspect of local Thai construction, taking into account the predominantly flat and lowland geography of the middle part of Thailand. Our exploration led us to study "retaining walls" and their crucial role in creating functional living spaces. We interpreted this concept by incorporating a main feature wall, reminiscent of a rigid support structure for restraining soil slopes, which now serves as a captivating display for Camper shoes. This design element harmoniously combines the local construction inspiration with Camper's sustainable ideals.

Additionally, our research into sustainable materials led us to explore innovative ways to reduce cement usage in prefabricated retaining blocks. We discovered that incorporating a higher proportion of rammed earth, a type of local soil, into the mixture aligned perfectly with Camper's core principles. This choice not only enhances sustainability but also reflects the brand's deep roots.

To further emphasize sustainability while ensuring practicality and an inviting atmosphere within the store, PHTAA ingeniously repurposed the modular retaining blocks into shoe display shelves. The overall space was carefully crafted using small modular display units to enhance the presentation of each individual piece of Camper footwear.
